Locally Designed Catamaran Project

ELNOS is pleased to support a locally designed 11-meter catamaran boat project called the NORTH CHANNEL eleven. The new boat was created for cruising couples or families to enjoy bareboat chartering in the North Channel of Lake Huron where it’s mostly sheltered, but can get rough quickly. Of course, the eleven is also a superb yacht for private ownership in other coastal waters.

It is designed to be an easy boat to drive, dock, anchor, and re-board swimmers from the water, as well as having a simple means for handling the tender.

The company’s designers obsessed over all the minute details. Top of the list was two identical staterooms, each with an ensuite bathroom, to provide maximum privacy and comfort for two couples. The convertible dinette in the main cabin can easily sleep another two people or children.

The creative design incorporates a pull-out stainless-steel swim step ladder with anti-slip polymer treads that is stored securely in the cavity under the swim deck.

The aft deck is enclosed with drop-down windows on both sides, and full-width sliding doors at the stern, all completely screened to create what the designers call the Muskoka Room - a pleasant airy space where you can spend a quiet evening at anchor watching a beautiful sunset.

Side doors in the Muskoka Room provide secure boarding from the dock, while a large walk-through windscreen makes going forward up onto the foredeck for sunbathing or to tend the anchor both accessible and safe.

The galley has a 9.1 ft-cubed fridge with a bottom  freezer for extended cruising, plus on-demand hot water, a two-burner induction cooktop, a microwave-convection oven, a large stainless-steel sink, and a barbeque aft on the swim deck — all the comforts and conveniences of home!

Power is provided by twin energy-efficient 140-hp Suzuki outboards, offering significant redundancy.  Over 2,000 watts of solar panels mounted on the roof keep the lithium-ion house batteries fully charged.

However, if the sun doesn’t shine for four or more days, there’s a 3.5 kW sound-proofed diesel genset in a lazarette that fires up automatically for instant back-up power.

The following table summarizes the core specification of the NORTH CHANNEL eleven:

The NORTH CHANNEL eleven is designed to exceed Transport Canada TP 1332 rules and regulations and will be NMMA certified using ABYC standards. *

About the Creator and Designer

The concept and design were created by local Elliot Lake resident and entrepreneur Ian Ross. Ross has been passionate about boats since the age of five when his camp counselor tossed him into an 8-foot sailing pram and unceremoniously shoved him out into the wind-swept waters of Georgian Bay where he promptly dumped…Undeterred, he climbed right back into the pram, and with lesson learned, figured out how to sail and soon graduated to skipper larger Snipes and Lightnings. Boating has been a major part of his life ever since.

In the 1980’s he set up a boatbuilding shop on Manitoulin Island where his crew built over fifty boats ranging in size from a diminutive 13-foot cedar-planked canoe, to a pair of British-style punts, to fitting out a series of downeast trawlers.

He spent two wonderful summers on his tugboat TINY, exploring the remote bays and anchorages all over the North Channel, where the nucleus of his project was envisioned.
