During the the Covid-19 lockdown, Rhianna Goymer (then an ELSS student) discovered a monarch butterfly habitat on Hillside Drive South. She placed small ‘do not mow’ signs on the property to preserve the milkweed plant which is the monarch caterpillar’s only food source. Rhianna continued to study the butterfly and has since tracked over 75 butterflies in Elliot Lake that migrate to Mexico. With the help of ELNOS & the City of Elliot Lake, the lawn will remain unmowed to preserve the habitat. A plaque has been placed at the location to educate the public and to mark the location as a habitat to preserve the butterfly population which is a species at risk.
